Hooking Up a BOV:
To hook up your BOV, T into the line on the throttle body as shown in the picture on the left(click to explode). Run the line to the top of your BOV. Leave the stock one alone. Read the whole article below so you can see what your BOV is actualy for.
This is how the turbo reacts with different blow off valve/ surge valve setups:
Turbo with no valve
Turbo makes boost, you get off the gas, turbo still pumping air but it has no place to go because throttle is closed so turbo slows down due to the air backing up to it. This causes the turbo to slow down and also aids in damaging the turbo because the exhaust is still spinning the turbine and now the back up air wants to spin it in the reverse way. Now after the shift when you get back on the gas, the turbo takes a while to recover before it hits full boost. Sooo, you feel a delay before the power comes back on.
Stock surge valve:
Stock surge valve has a small opening on it. This opening opens up when the throttle closes. This releves the pressure in the system to prevent the turbo from slowing down and also to preven the shaft from twisting due to the exhaust still turning the turbine.
Mopar Party favor type Rice valve Noise maker wanna be a real BOV (MPFHBTRVNMWBARB) :
The MPFHBTRVNMWBARB does not do anything other than make noise. It does not relieve the pressure from the turbo, the actual surge valve on top of it does that. It does not accomidate more boost, it does nothing. It just takes the already expelled air and vents it instead of putting it back into the inlet of the turbo.
There is only one thing the MPFHBTRVNMWBARB does which probly helps in theory but you really can't feel the difference. It prevents air from entering the turbo at 90 degrees to the air coming from the intake. ANd thats about all it does. Well i take that back, the MPFHBTRVNMWBARB also has a nice OMG bling bling affect to a certain degree.
Getting off the porch and parting with the big boys at 18psi type BOV setups:
When you up the boost on your car, you have alot more air rushing through your plumbing. When you shift, the stock surge valve is not big enough to vent the extra added volume of air as it use to when you where at 11psi etc.
When you are running high boost (18psi etc) and install a real BOV, you will notice that after the shift, the boost will stablize alot sooner and the power will recover faster vs having only a stock surge valve or having a MPFHBTRVNMWBARB installed.
What I recommend:
I personaly left the stock surge valve on my car when i had a lil turbo on it. I also put a "party with the big boys "BOV on it too. As soon as i installed the big boy BOV, sure enough you would feel a difference after the shift when running 18psi.
I do not care for installing a BOP on the car. I hear alot of people saying that the stock one leaks but i have never experiened this. If you run 25psi x Pi or something like that like soem people on here do with the stock turbo, then probly it does leak, who knows? When your running 18psi which is the most the map registiers, it does not leak.
NOTE: You hear alot of yahoos crying about leaks. #1 leak i find is on the surge valve area after it was tampered with! Block of plates and mopar rice valves have a high tendency to leak because its more difficult to get the gasket/silicon to seat correctly with the turbo on the car. Also the stock surge valve tends to get bent when removed. So when you install the rice valve on it, the surge does not sit flush on the rice valve.
WHy Do I run both valves in stead of just one? Good question gentleman in the back. PIcture this, if you have two pipes full of water, which will empty sooner, a pipe with a valve at the end of it or a pipe with two valves at the ends?
So now you see why i prefer running the stock and the big boy unit together.
If your into the whole "Oh damn, what bov sound was that?" Then go ahead and put on a BOP, it will make your bov sound louder being that more air will be coming out of it now.
I recommend the following BOV units:
Greddy Type-RS. Its the new boy on campus and has a valve diameter thats about 25% more than the Type-s. I recommend this one if you plan on going with a bigger turbo upgrade in the future.
Greddy Type-S
This unit is pretty good. I have heard of htem failing on some eclipse but I personaly never had an issue with it. If you have a stock turbo, this is a nice piece for you IF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOu can get one. They are now discontinued.
HK$ SSQBOV
This is the #1 seller of all BOV. WHen the HKS goes out of stock, the greddy is next follow by the blitz. HKS is a great BOV, the only down fall is that you need a set of quality snap ring pliers to install it.
Tial.
If you have a stock turbo, tial is not for you.
RFL
I dont recommend this piece cause the base leaks at times, you need to take it apart to adjust it and the piston inside wears down causing it to stick and leak.
Blitz BOV.
The blitz is the first piston based bov (like the RFL) that I can remember. I used it on my supra and it worked great. I could see the piston wearing down though. I heard many storys of them sticking once the piston wore down enough. Ever since this i stayed away from piston based units.
Turbonetics Raptor.
It has a nice name to it i must say. I personaly have no experienec with it so I cant say.
